The Sturlungar Trail: A historical tour of power, destiny and spectacular places
Welcome to a unique and amazing day tour through the historical sites of the Sturlungas in Skagafjörður – where the past comes alive and history rises directly from the land itself. This is a journey back to the 13th century, to the sites where the greatest ruling dynasties in Icelandic history clashed in bloody conflicts that changed the fate of the nation for centuries.
On this specially designed tour, guests are led through the historical sites of Skagafjörður where power struggles, betrayals, ambitions and tragedies shaped history. Skagafjörður was in many ways the center of these great conflicts and here the history of the Sturlungaslóðir is written in every field, every hill and every riverbank. We visit the places where history really happened – ancient church sites, Chief's estates, battlefields and sites that still retain the atmosphere and mystery of centuries gone by.
Living History at Historical Sites
Instead of merely reading about these events in books, you will stand in the footsteps of the chieftains, as the gods and farmers did in the past. We will relive the Battle of Örlygsstaðir (1238)—the deadliest clash in Icelandic history—and the infamous Flugumýri Fire (1253), where a celebratory wedding feast was turned into a fiery tragedy. These stories come alive through expert guides who masterfully weave together history, human drama, and cultural heritage, painting a vivid and thrilling picture of life and death during these turbulent times.
