Rural living, History, and Culinary Delights in Skagafjörður

Embark on an unforgettable day tour through the heart of the Skagafjörður countryside! We invite you to a cozy, leisurely journey led by locals, where warm Northerners hospitality is at the center of everything we do. Leave the stress of daily life behind; our goal is simply to savor the magnificent scenery and exceptional local ingredients in peace.

This tour is thoughtfully designed for those who want to slow down, embrace the moment, and experience Icelandic rural life at its absolute best. Your guide is a Skagafjörður native and the owner of the charming café Áskaffi. Bringing a deep passion for the region’s history and cultural heritage, she will guide you through the mysteries of the fjord, share vivid stories of the people who shaped it, and ensure a warm welcome at every single stop.

Setting off from Varmahlíð, our route takes us through the historic Lýtingsstaðahreppur district to meet local farmers and artisans on their home turf. Our first stop is at Lýtingsstaðir, which features unique and beautiful exhibitions dedicated to the Icelandic horse and sheepdog. Here, you'll gain insight into how these animals have stood by the nation through the centuries, accompanied by entertaining tales of the deep bond between man and nature.

From there, we head to Rúnalist, a true haven for anyone captivated by Icelandic design and food culture. This beautiful space showcases unique local crafts and premium goods from artisanal food producers across Iceland. We will take our time browsing the shelves and sampling delicious treats that are sure to tickle your taste buds.

Following a lively chat and our tasting session, it’s time to sit down for a meal. We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in the relaxed, incredibly welcoming atmosphere of the café at Starrastaðir, where local ingredients and mindful care come together in every bite.

Afterward, we take a relaxing scenic drive through Steinstaðarhverfi, passing the dramatic rock formations of Stapi, with a peaceful stop at Reykjakirkja church. Our route then winds back through the upper valley, stopping to admire the historic turf church, Víðimýrarkirkja.

We culminate this wonderful day at Stefánstofa in Miðgarður. There, we’ll take in magnificent, panoramic views of the fjord while treating ourselves to delicious, homemade pastries. It is the perfect conclusion to a day dedicated to togetherness, captivating storytelling, rich flavors, and pure tranquility.
